The length of each therapy session is generally determined by the type of session it is and by the number of people attending it. The first session, sometimes called an "assessment" or "intake session", is typically anywhere from an hour to 2 hours in length. The first session is designed to obtain relevant clinical information, get a sense of the presenting problem(s) and begin developing a plan of care. Sessions with individuals are easier than sessions with couples or families because there are less people to talk to. Fewer questions means less time spent in the session. The remaining sessions are shorter, typically in the 30-60 minute range. All in all, I prefer 60-90 minute intake sessions and 30-45 minute follow up sessions. In most cases, the length of the session can be adjusted as necessary.

I have an eclectic approach to therapy. There are several types of therapy, such a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution focused therapy, trauma focused therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy that I find useful, but I don't believe that any one theory of counseling covers everything. Therefore, I use parts of several theories or a number of techniques I have found helpful over the years.

I do believe that most of the issues we struggle with are a result of how we have either interpreted an event or because of lies we have told ourselves for long periods of time. For example, if you continually tell yourself "I'm unlovable", then your behavior, the way you talk, and the things that you do are going to make you unlovable. Overall, the strategy is to identify the needs, develop a plan and then use whatever we need to use to help you feel better and live better.

Some people prefer to have their counseling start from the foundation of what the Bible says about life and the principles we should live by. Some enjoy having scripture and prayer incorporated into the counseling session. In addition to my MSW and Clinical Social Work License, I obtained a Master of Divinity Degree from Grace Theological Seminary in 1991 and served as both a Youth Pastor and an Associate Pastor for over 15 years. I am a Christian myself so I am happy to do Christian Counseling with you if you prefer it. I do not force my beliefs or philosophy on anyone so if you don't ask for Christian Counseling, you won't get Christian Counseling.

I use a third-party administrator called Headway. You can either visit my profile on the Headway site to schedule an appointment, or you can contact me and I'll help get you set up. I'll send you an invitation to Headway and you will get a link to use for inputting all of your insurance and payment methods. Once you are set up, we will schedule your appointment. When your appointment is over, I'll submit the documentation from the session and Headway will create and submit the claim. If you are a self-pay client, they will charge your payment method for the self-pay amount.
